Teacher Confessional Goes To The Movies!
Seeing that it’s Friday afternoon, going out for the weekend is number 1 on my mind right now. Yes, I still have one more class to teach…and two students coming in after school for help (on Friday!?!?!) but I can’t help thinking about the weekend.
I used to go see a ton of movies and then rent a ton more. Recently it’s been slow going on the movie front for me. I saw Quantum of Solace a few weeks back. My only regret while watching that movie was that there was no DVR to rewind and play back in slow motion. Why are extremely fast action sequences a good thing? I saw Wall-E last weekend, which was just incredible. Why is Pixar the only company that can come up with compelling stories that are not remakes or sequels?
I’ve been seeing trailers for The Day The Earth Stood Still (a remake!) and of course, being the science nerd I am, really, truly want to go see it. Right now! I’m one of the few people who think Keanu Reeves is vastly underrated as an actor. Does he show great emotion? No, but then again his roles aren’t written that way. Ok, so I’m outing myself as a Matrix trilogy freak. Laurence Fishburn on CSI anyone? I tend to read the EW movie reviews for new movies, but I’m always wary of their recommendation. This time, there’s less than glowing reviews, but I’ll still see it, and I’ll probably like it way better than the critics. Same thing happened with Zach & Miri and Nick & Nora. Loved Zach & Miri (mostly bad reviews) and thought Nick & Nora was just ok (some review called it revolutionary). I guess I go into a movie with no expectations and let it give me that first impression. Others expect so much and then are disappointed.
Any other movies I should go see in the coming weeks?
A few weeks back I told my students that I went to see Nick & Nora over the weekend. Response: “Was that the one where they make a porno?” Me: “No, that was a different movie. What were you watching?”
